Real time mitigation of anomalous propagation clutter

چکیده
Mitigation of anomalous propagation clutter (AP) is an ongoing problem in radar meteorology. AP clutter routinely contaminates radar data masking weather returns causing poor data quality. The problem is typically mitigated by clutter filtering all radar data but this will also eliminate weather data at zero velocity. With the advent of fast digital receivers capable of real time spectral processing, the real time identification and elimination of AP clutter is now possible. A fuzzy logic algorithm is used to distinguish between clutter echo and precipitation echoes. Based on this classification, clutter filters can be applied to only those radar resolution volumes where clutter is present, in real time. In this way weather echoes are preserved while clutter echoes are mitigated. The clutter filters used in this paper are spectral based, i.e., they are applied in the spectral domain. In many cases, after the clutter echoes are filtered, the underlying weather echo signatures are revealed thereby significantly increasing the visibility of weather echo. This paper describes the Fuzzy Logic algorithm for clutter echo identification and the technique is illustrated with experimental data from S-Pol, NCAR’s (National Center for Atmospheric Research) S-band polarimetric radar.

Modelling of weather radar echoes from anomalous propagation using a hybrid parabolic equation method and NWP model data
Contamination of weather radar echoes by anomalous propagation (anaprop) mechanisms remains a serious issue in quality control of radar precipitation estimates. Although significant progress has been made identifying clutter due to anaprop there is no unique method that solves the question of data reliability without removing genuine data. The work described here relates to the development of a...
متن کاملP10.11 Automatic Detection and Removal of Ground Clutter Contamination on Weather Radars
Radar backscatter from the ground can contaminate weather signals, often resulting in severely biased meteorological estimates. If not removed, these clutter returns tend to bias reflectivity high as well as Doppler velocity and spectrum width toward zero. A ground clutter filter (GCF) can mitigate this contamination and provide unbiased meteorological estimates but typically with reduced quali...
متن کاملP10.1 Automatic Detection of Wind Turbine Clutter Using Doppler Spectral Features
Wind turbines built to generate electricity cause clutter contamination that is often difficult to distinguish from weather signals. As the country relies on wind power for a larger portion of its energy production, more wind farms are being built to meet this demand. More wind turbines within the range of weather radar increase unwanted clutter returns, which may affect users and other algorit...
متن کاملDetecting weather radar clutter using satellite-based nowcasting products
This contribution presents some initial results from investigations into detection of weather radar clutter by data fusion with satellite-based nowcasting products. Weather radar data from three C-band Doppler weather radars of the Danish Meteorological Institute has been extracted for cases of sea and land clutter caused by anomalous propagation as well as cases of clutter free data. In additi...
متن کاملClutter and rainfall discrimination by means of doppler-polarimetric measurements and vertical reflectivity profile analysis
The estimation of rainfall rate and other parameters from radar scattering volume is heavily affected by the presence of intense sea and ground clutter and echoes which appears in anomalous propagation condition. To deal with these non meteorological echoes we present a new clutter removal algorithm which combines the results of previous works. The algorithm fully exploits both the Doppler and ...
